Imagine a world where you have to elect a political figure through social media after a violent protest. This is what could be the start of other countries getting inspired to overthrow their government. If you hop on TikTok, you can see a lot of people complaining about their government and trying to start a revolution
Discord, a communication app launched in 2015, is a communication app typically used to connect with people or find online communities that share interests with you through video calls or texting. It’s popular with Gen Z in particular, with nearly 65 percent saying they feel more confident using community-focused apps, according to Impero research.
“I mainly use Discord for communications with friends and keeping myself posted on game updates and stuff like that,” said senior Alejo Magdziak.
After citizens of Nepal overthrew their government and burned their parliament during a deadly protest known as the ‘Gen Z protest,’ Discord was used to hold an election to vote for the Prime Minister of Nepal, a country located in south Asia, between China and India. Sushila Karki was elected prime minister, and became interim prime minister on Sept. 12, 2025, after the protest. The protest started after the Nepali government shut down all the social media platforms in the country, claiming that social media didn’t help remove content they considered undesirable.
Kariki received a whopping 3,833 of votes from the community, declaring the 73-year-old interim prime minister. Though Karki’s election was also based on discussions between various government stakeholders and Gen Z representatives, the decision was made after much deliberation from the Discord community.
Other countries could also succumb to the same fate with bad politicians and government, especially with the influence of social media and how popular it has gotten in recent years. Social media could potentially influence the government and the choices they make, affecting the future.
