ChatGPT, released in November of 2022, is a well-known AI platform that students of all ages, from all around the world, have used at some point. While some students use it for every single assignment they are given, abusing it, others find AI as a useful source for information and homework.
Recently, Wake County officials decided to address the mass amount of cheating and plagiarizing, so they banned ChatGPT from school-issued devices.
“[I think the ban is] good so that people can stop copying other things that’s not their work,” said freshman Eliaianna Katayama. Katayama in particular believes that students should use their imagination like she believes we’re meant to. But it’s no surprise that others disagreed.
“I used to use it daily to help me with my work, to study. I think it’ll be not a problem, but I think a lot of kids’ grades are going to drop,” said freshman Eli Sivin. Unlike Katayama, Sivin has admittedly used ChatGPT. Sivin is worried that most students’ grades will drop because of the ban of ChatGPT, and maybe he is speaking from experience.
The two freshmen have also agreed that students will start using different AIs instead of the now banned ChatGPT. Katayama also said that she’s already witnessed students start using alternative AI platforms.
Ultimately, this shows how dependent on AI some students have become. Students are smart; they just have to actually try instead of depending on a robot to do their work.
