Last year, students at FVHS were stoked because of a rapidly spreading rumor about lunch being extended to one hour and that A and B lunch would be combined. It was all too good to be true.
Disappointment. Curiosity. All emotions students felt when they walked into the first day of school to discover the hype was for nothing.
Sophomore Jose Contreraz said, “I truly believed it was going to happen. Me and my friends got all excited and everything. It’s frustrating that nothing has changed, if I’m being honest with you.”
No changes were made to the lunch period and the lunches were not combined, letting down both teachers and students who thought the rumor was a done deal.
The big question is: why didn’t we get the hour-long lunch? The decision seemed to be final, but the change never happened.
It even surprised teachers, like math teacher Vincent Pratama, who said, “It’s a bad idea to not have longer lunches.” Pratama said. “I’m practically rushing to finish my lunch by the time the bell rings.”
If it was under discussion, what factors stopped the change from happening? Could it be the size of the cafeteria, the amount of students, or maybe even the amount of food available? Whatever the reason, the lack of communication has only fueled more questions than answers.
Andrew Longo, a sophomore at Fuquay-Varina High School, said, “I run cross country and lunch is one of my favorite times of the day. I get to chill in between classes. If it was longer, I’d feel even more comfortable.”
So there you have it folks, there will be no hour-long lunch at Fuquay this year. For now, the hour-long lunch remains nothing more than a rumor that left students excited for more time to eat, talk and unwind. Still, the chatter around the possibility shows just how much students and staff alike crave a longer break in the middle of the day.
Who knows? Maybe one day it will become a reality. Until then, students will keep rushing their conversations and watching the clock tick down, still dreaming of that golden hour.
