Lately, fashion doesn’t really feel like it’s all about brands anymore; it’s about what you can make yourself. More and more teens here at FVHS are getting into DIY clothing, and I think it’s less of a trend and more of a mindset. Whether it’s cutting up thrifted shirts, painting on your jeans or pants, or just stitching random patches, people are showing how they can make their own clothes that feel more like them.
A big reason the whole DIY wave is taking off is because of social media. You’ll cross past a video of somebody turning a boring hoodie into something crazy and suddenly you’re in your room with a pair of scissors and your mom’s old sewing machine. It’s almost too easy to find inspiration now, especially with TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube being full of people showing off their own DIY clothing. And the cool thing is, it’s not just big fashion influencers doing it, everybody can DIY their own clothes even if all you have is a Sharpie.
But it’s not always just about looking good. A lot of teenagers today really care about standing out, but for a lot of teens they just don’t want to support fast fashion brands like Zara, Forever 21, or even H&M. DIY is a cheaper, more creative, and more eco-friendly way to stay stylish without having to spend hundreds dollars on clothes that in reality only costs around $3 to make. Instead of buying something that a million people in the world already have, you could make something that only you would be able to pull off.
“I cut my corduroy pants a little bit ago into jorts. They’re so much cooler this way and definitely my style,” said senior Dominic Bianco.
Bianco shows how even if all you have is a pair of scissors you can still DIY your clothing to better fit you and your style.
DIY fashion has slowly been drifting away from being a trend, and is now more regarded as a movement. Teenagers aren’t waiting around for the perfect clothing item to release, they’re making it in their bedrooms. That’s what makes it so unique.
