As a kid, it’s very common to be desperate for a job or want to start making their own source of income. Parents often wonder, what may be the best first jobs for their kid? Here are a few recommendations.
Starting out, it’s best to find something for a teenager that is buildable for experience. For example, a serving job is perfect for building experience in customer service and/or gaining more social skills if that is a quality that is lacking. Though working in the restaurant industry may be hard, it builds a strong foundation and character in the long run.
Another example could be a job in retail. For example, working at a Marshalls or an Old Navy are great ways to build experience in retail. Both jobs are great for being in multiple departments like cash registers or folding clothes. Regardless, building experience in retail sets up your experience well enough to continue moving higher up.
If a restaurant or retail setting isn’t your cup of tea, there are always jobs like working for a family one-on-one, like dog walking or babysitting. Dog walking and babysitting lets responsibility really play a huge role especially at such a young age. Each job lets you speak with either the dog owner or parent and determine how much is appropriate for an ideal pay per hour along with what to do when taking care of the dog/child.
Overall, it really depends on where you plan going with your future to build a realistic resume for future experience. Being a teen, it may be hard to find a first job considering you start with no experience, but it is definitely not impossible. There are lots of places to work, so it’s best not to limit yourself and explore as many options and opportunities at a young age while you can.
