With AP exams right around the corner, students at FVHS are starting to spend more time preparing for the tests that could provide them college credit. We asked how students are going to prepare for these exams.

A lot of sophomores at our school are taking their first AP exam this year. It’s been shown that they have been taking more time to study and review their material than someone who has taken AP exams before.

Sophomore McKayla O’Donnell is taking her first AP exam next Tuesday for AP Government.

O’Donnell said, “I’ve been reviewing all the documents and writing definitions of the key words.”

Sophomore Yana Papalava is also taking her AP Government exam next week.

She said, “I’ve been doing the same things as McKayla, but I also made a Quizlet.”

Sophomore Ethan Hagen is taking the AP Gov exam.

“I am preparing for my AP exam by reviewing my notes and practice tests regularly to strengthen my understanding of the key concepts. I also use online resources and study guides to target my weak areas and improve my test-taking strategies.”

Some students like sophomores Zoë Healy and Rowan Davidson are taking two AP exams.

Healy is taking exams for AP Gov and AP Pre-Calculus.

Healy said, “I’m going to fill out the review guides and look over them daily. I may also have my friends quiz me on terms.”

Davidson is taking the AP U.S. History exam and the AP Gov exam.

She said, “For AP Gov, I’ve been preparing with quizlet flashcards and the review that the class has done over this past week. For APUSH, it’s a bit different since there’s so much content, but there’s a timeline that Mr. Bushhouse made during one of the review sessions that covers most of the timelines in the exam.”

Clearly, vocabulary plays a major role in understanding the content of both AP Gov and APUSH.

Davidson said, “With AP Gov it’s a lot easier to memorize the cases and vocab, but with APUSH there’s a lot that you need to know about American history. It’s been really helpful that Mr. Bushouse has us take notes the way he does because I have everything I absolutely need to know for the exam written out and it aids me a lot in studying.”

As these exams approach, students have been doing everything they can to prepare. Whether they’re studying vocabulary, making flashcards, or using resources their teacher has provided, students are taking the time to ensure they get a grade they will feel proud about.
