High school can get hectic and figuring out what to eat is just one more thing to have to deal with. Although our students may be busy, the importance of a good meal isn’t overlooked by them. Plenty of students still manage to make themselves meals that are convenient, quick or cheap.
Having good meals throughout the week matters more than you may think. Consistently eating healthy food can make a big difference in energy, focus and mood. In addition, knowing how to cook for yourself is a very useful skill, especially for the future when you’re the one providing for yourself.
Convenience is also a big deal, students don’t want to spend 45 minutes making themselves a meal, especially when a lot of students have limited time to eat due to playing sports or participating in other extracurricular activities. Meals that take 10-15 minutes like quesadillas, eggs, wraps or sandwiches are all very popular choices.
“I always make steak and rice. It only takes like 10 minutes to make because while the rice is cooking, I’ll make the steak. Then it’s done,” said sophomore Adam Stranksy.
Meals like this are a good example of how students are managing to still eat healthy, protein dense food while not spending forever in the kitchen. A lot of students, like Stranksy, might also cook multiple things at once to have more time for themselves or to give themselves more time to eat.
At the end of the day, students here at FVHS tend to go for meals that are easy to make and still taste great. Whether it’s pasta, quick protein, sandwiches, or even a smoothie, their go-to meals show a mix of convenience and creativity that fits in with their busy schedules. Remember it’s important to nourish your body, but it doesn’t always have to be a chore.
