The FVHS stunt team has had a rough season and holds a record of 2-6 this season, but overall, they persevere and find ways to improve for the team. The team’s last match was home against Cleveland and Willow Springs. They lost both of the matches leaving them a little devastated.
Taylor Marshall, a freshman on the team, said, “Our last match was a little rough, losing twice at home and getting beat by Willow, but we learned things to help us for next time.”
The team practices three times a week with well rounded workouts each day, improving old skills and learning new ones. They also have one match a week.
This year the team consists of mostly underclassmen with only one junior and one senior on the team.
This is also FVHS teacher Laura Niemann’s first year coaching this specific sport, but she has enjoyed every aspect of it.
“My proudest moment was when we won our first game. I have never coached this exact sport before, so it was a huge success for us,” said Niemann.
The team’s bond and dynamic is what keeps their spirit up. They cheer each other on from the sides, and they continue to have fun while on the mats.
“This year’s team is full of leaders and girls who work hard. We are all new together, which I thought was going to be difficult, but I have created a positive environment. The teamwork and comradery have been awesome,” said Niemann.
On April 10, the stunt team was scheduled to compete against Smithfield-Selma High and Willow Spring High, but Smithfield-Selma withdrew, leaving the match to proceed between Willow Spring High and Fuquay-Varina High.
Willow Spring High defeated FVHS 14-6, but nonetheless, they gave it their all.
The next stunt match will be at home on April 16, against Panther Creek and Willow Spring at 4:00 p.m.
