Fortune cookies should be more creative

The message inside a fortune cookie should be words that truly inspire, not overused phrases.

Imagine getting a fortune cookie after an amazing dinner, hoping for a deep insightful message about your future, only to crack it open and read a corny overused phrase.

Fortune cookies are supposed to be fun and exciting, but most of the time, they end up being a letdown.

Fortune cookies have so much potential yet most leave people feeling disappointed. Surprisingly, fortune cookies weren’t always this predictable. They were first created in California in the early 20th century by both Japanese and Chinese immigrants.

The idea of fortune cookies was to give people a small moment of reflection about their future, but over time, they became mass produced, and their messages lost the creativity they once had.

Senior Aya Aani said, “When my dad first came to the U.S. he really enjoyed reading the messages inside but now he says they aren’t the same.”

A once exciting and unique experience has turned into something forgettable.

Some people might say that fortune cookies don’t have to be deeply meaningful or creative, just the tradition alone is enough to keep them relevant. However, bringing the joy back could make the tradition even better. Imagine the excitement you’d get when you crack open a cookie and it resonates with your current situation and gives you insight for the future.

With a little creativity, fortune cookies could return to their original purpose. Whether through humor or personalized messages, fortune cookies can become exciting again. A small change could turn a simple after dinner treat into something people look forward to.
