This season, the women’s varsity soccer team went to take on Ashley High School at Swansboro High on Feb. 28 and Jacksonville High School on March 1. Both games were great and well fought.
On Friday, Feb. 28, Ashley High defeated Fuquay 0-6 with a rough second half. After half-time the girls fought harder but couldn’t regain control over the game.
Junior Brooklyn Gonerway said, “Coach Gannon’s halftime speech was brutally honest, but in the best way possible. She called us out, gave us advice on how to execute, and then set expectations for our performance. The level of play went up from there, setting a standard for how we’re expected to play.”
That shift in mindset made all the difference. They played with more confidence and used great sportsmanship to help finish the game stronger. Gannon’s tough love pushed them to reach new heights, and her leadership will continue to drive their success this season.
“We worked for each other. Regardless of how tired you were, or how much we didn’t want to keep going, we did because we knew that someone was relying on you to perform your job,” said Gonerway. “If you don’t do what you’re supposed to, then someone else has to do that for you… creating a domino effect.”
When Fuquay went to Jacksonville High to play the next game, they took what they learned from the night before to secure the win. They fought hard to get the win. Jacksonville was a tough competitor to take on, making it even harder to untie the game and take home the win, but in the end they came out on top.
“Sometimes we would allow the other team to set the intensity for the game, then attempt to match it rather than setting the tone for the speed of play on our own,” said Gonerway.
Since these games have been played, the womens soccer team has played two more games, with one loss and one win for the Bengals.
They went to play at Athens Drive High School, and they scored 0-1, making it a tough night for the Bengals. Since this game, the team played Green Hope, coming together, defeating them 3-0, making the record 1-4.
Come out and show love to our lady bengals as they take on Corinth Holders High School on March 17,2025 at 6:30 pm.
