The popular rapper Doechii is set to receive the 2025 Woman of the Year award at the upcoming Billboard Women in Music event on Saturday, March 29, at Youtube Theater in Inglewood, California. The event will also be live streamed on Vizio WatchFree+.

Doechii is the third woman to receive the award after also receiving the Billboard Rising Star award, following Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. Doechii has broken into the popular eye with her singles “Alter Ego” and “DENIAL IS A RIVER.” Her rap album “ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL” cemented her spot in the rap scene with it blowing up in popularity and winning her a Grammy for Best Rap Album.

The Billboard Women in Music awards started in 2007 to honor the contributions made to the music industry by women. The very first winner was Reba McEntire, with awards given to other popular artists like Billie Eilish, SZA, Katy Perry and Olivia Rodrigo. Taylor Swift has won the award twice and has also been named Women of the Decade for the 2010s.

At Billboard’s 2025 Women in Music event, alongside Doechii, other artists will also be receiving awards. Jennie, a member of the K-pop group “BLACKPINK” will be given the Global Force award, while Gracie Abrams will be named Songwriter of the Year. Aespa will be named Group of the Year, and Tyla will receive the Impact Award presented by Bose, among other awards.

Senior Jordan Enwereuzor said, “Doechii deserved woman of the year. She’s creative, openly queer and has a style that is so unique to her. It means a lot to see her in the media.” Doechii’s genre-bending music has resonated with many people. Her lyrics stick out to people in how personal and relatable they are.

Doechii has been relatively under the radar in the music industry for a while. Her debut album released in 2021, and she became adored by fans, but still hadn’t hit the mainstream. Many of her songs got popular on Tiktok, such as “Alter Ego,” “What It Is” and “DENIAL IS A RIVER.” The latter song even criticized her Tiktok popularity in the lyrics, “Wristwatch, drip drop, labels want the Tiktoks. Now I’m making Tiktok music… I need a cleanse, need a detox.”

The artist’s second studio album “ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL” embodied her moving on from Tiktok music and viral sounds into more meaningful music. Regardless of one’s personal taste in her music, it can’t be denied that she has worked hard for her place in the industry. Doechii’s popularity on Tiktok and other viral sounds prove that she has a way with song writing.
