Everyone has those moments when you have nothing else to do and are lacking enthusiasm over their current activity or lack of something to do. That’s called boredom. Since the term has been coined, there is a negative connotation surrounding feeling bored. Many are called lazy, unmotivated, unaccomplished, and many more simply because they feel bored and have nothing else to do. But boredom does not always stem from laziness, and there can be many positive connections to this feeling.
Sophomore Hannah Eep said, “Feeling bored is important because it can really make people think and spend time with themselves and their thoughts.”
Boredom can also be a result of overstimulation. It could be that you are so used to having something to do that having everything finished leaves you confused and bored because your body automatically wants to do something. Boredom can be motivating to some people while others take it as a sign to relax and unwind.
“Being bored does motivate me to do things because I’ll actively look for something to do to get out of that state. Sometimes when I am bored I go workout or go for a walk, just to get my body moving,” said senior Ava Mitchell.
However, no one wants to feel like they can’t or do not have anything to do. There are many ways to get out of a bored state, such as taking a walk, picking up a new hobby, even talking to friends can make you feel less bored. Some people enjoy cleaning when they are bored, while others go to the gym to work out. It all depends on what you are comfortable with.
“It could give you a chance to do something you have been meaning to do but never had time for,” said Mitchell. “It could also be negative because you could just end up wasting your time by staying bored, and then get frustrated because you have nothing to do.”
Boredom can be a result of many different factors. However, how you cope with them is important. Instead of doom-scrolling, which everyone is guilty of, do something active or pick up a new hobby you have been seeing on the internet. There is a lot more you can do with your boredom than just lay in bed, no matter how nice it feels.
