Student Council hosted a Culture Fair on Feb.
27, 2025. This event showcased many different cultures from around the world that the student body represents. Students brought in posters, candy, and even artifacts from their respective cultures.
From Canada down to Argentina and across Spain to Germany, around 20 different booths were at the fair. Helene Ly presented a Hmong/Laos tapestry, and FVHS Spanish teacher Raquel Ferreyra brought maté, a South American caffeinated herbal drink, for the attendees to try. Maté is the national drink of Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, where Ferreyra is originally from.
Freshman Diya Krishnan-Karthikeyan said, “We used the culture day fair to spread more information and expand the knowledge of cultures around the world.”
Krishnan-Karthikeyan explained that she enjoyed helping the fair. She passed out paper “passports” that could get stamped from each culture booth that people visited.
“You could have learned a lot of new stuff. You could connect your culture and religion with the others and get new information. We learned how we are similar and different and why we should respect each other,” said Krishnan-Karthikeyan.
Student Council showed that there are many different cultures represented at Fuquay-Varina and wants to do this again to spread a sense of community and connect people across the town.
Krishnan-Karthikeyan said, “We want more people representing cultures next year.”
Senior Jordan Enwereuzor performed a dance to the song “Color Blind” by the Glee cast, to celebrate Black History Month. He wowed the crowd with his leaps across the gym floor.
Junior Paul Tolle presented his home country of Chile. He enjoyed hosting and learning about the other cultures.
“A teacher told me that I could do a presentation because she had the paper made already, so I jumped in,” Tolle said. “It’s fun to learn about how other people and other countries and cultures act differently. You also get to know other people, and in doing so, make friends.”
