Fuquay-Varina High School is making a significant impact teaming with the community for a food drive benefiting local families. The drive has been a great success with food donations continuing to pour in. The community has offered an immense amount of dedication and commitment to this cause.

Throughout the drive, representatives from every club and organization at FVHS have stepped forward to contribute in their own way. This participation from the students has helped this drive to be such a success.

The FVHS art club designed and created donation boxes for the front of the school. The boxes took over two hours of work from the club’s members.

“It had to be eye-catching so that hopefully we get some more donations,” said senior Dakota Walker, president of the art club.

This food drive is not only to give immediate assistance to the ones in need, but also to provide a culture of giving and compassion within the school and larger community. The organizers plan to hold the drive two to three times a year to ensure they reach as many people as possible.

One of the main organizers, Jennifer Larsen-Neumann, feels strongly for this cause.

“We don’t want anyone to ever be hungry, and we want people to know that if your family is going through a hard time we are here to help you,” said Neumann.

This is the kind of collective effort that just proves the importance of addressing basic human needs. In the world we live in, the concept of struggling to get food on the table is hard to grasp for many. Food is mainly overlooked because while one family might not think twice about how to get food on the table, another family in the same community might not know when their next meal will be.

The school encourages anyone and everyone to get involved in the act through food donation, volunteering of time and raising awareness. In the future, FVHS and its community partners are determined to use small acts of kindness to make meaningful and lasting change within their community.

It is the hope of all involved that as the food drive continues to grow it will influence other similar programs in other schools and surrounding areas. The message remains the same, no one should have to worry whether or not they will be able to feed both themselves or their family.
