It’s been more than 1,000 days since the last snowfall in Fuquay-Varina, and students are at the edge of their seats waiting for the school system to give the OK to a snow day. While students are jumping for snow, there is a downside to schools calling snow days, but schools have found a solution to keep students educated even at home.
Students at FVHS like the idea of having snow days, but many other schools have gotten rid of snow days because of how little snow actually appears. Because of that, schools don’t have to worry about extending the school year into summer or taking away vacation days due to days taken off for snow.
“Not having snow days is dangerous, even if it possibly snows, because the freezing temperature creates ice on roads and sidewalks,” said senior Caleb Street. “It makes it harder for students and teachers to drive safely to school, especially for large vehicles like buses, which are relied on heavily by students to get to school.”
Other schools get too much snow and must cancel early, but because there are so many days with snowfall nonstop, the schools have used online learning to their advantage with inspiration from the pandemic. Instead of students waiting for schools to reopen, the schools will bring the teaching to them so that the year will not be extended and students can continue to learn.
Sophomore Kaedin Shorts said, “Being a student who went through online schooling during Covid made it hard for me to learn and focus during class, and I think it would have the same effect during snow days when I could be having fun and spending time with my family.”
Only time will tell when the next snowfall will be at FVHS. The tell tale signs of puddles freezing and 21° degree weather nipping at students’ noses are present, but We’ll see if we get a snow day.
