The Fuquay-Varina varsity cheer team proudly represented their school at the NCHSAA states competition Dec. 7. The competition was held at the Raleigh Convention Center in the Varsity All-Girl Medium division. The team showcased months of hard work and dedication on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
The event featured some of North Carolina’s most talented teams, all that were pushing for top places in their division. Fuquay included a mix of high energy tumbling, precise choreography and strong stunts, demonstrating the teams ability to work and strive together. Their partner stunts were a big highlight of their routine and drew cheers from the crowd while reflecting the team’s commitment to excellence.
The journey to the state competition began long before the season’s first game or practice. The team dedicated countless hours to perfecting their skills, attending every practice and participating in additional conditioning to prepare for the physical and mental demands on their routines. Their commitment paid off as they earned a spot among the state’s elite teams in their division.
“We are all really close, so we work well as a team. It helps us being close so we can do better as well as practicing almost everyday,” said sophomore Brooke Fuquay.
While the competition was fierce, the cheer team held their own against the other strong opponents. Their performance not only highlighted their technical abilities but also their sense of teamwork and pride.
As the team placed seventh at the competition they walked away with many valuable lessons and memories. The support from fans, other teammates and family added a sense of accomplishment for the event.
“With our ups and downs, you have your people. Whenever you walk into practice it feels like you’re in there to not only do what’s best for yourself but also your other teammates,” said junior Emma Baker.
As the season concludes, the team looks forward to building from this experience. For the seniors it was a statement event to their high school cheering career, while the underclassmen are eager for more opportunities, like this event, to come in the following years.
