Many of you have probably noticed this when listening to new music on social media platforms like Youtube or Spotify, that music has gotten worse. This is because the music industry doesn’t care about the quality of music they put out there anymore.
Much of the new music you have heard has gradually become more vulgar and less creative. You see this because talent and popularity are no longer associated with one another in the music industry since they value fame and money more than talent.
They’d rather promote talentless people because they are easier to put out there and gain the attention of the public.
The female rapper Ice Spice is a prime example of how the music industry favors talentless people. Even though her music is considered terrible, she still acquired plenty of fame and popularity.
Many of you have heard her music on social media, especially TikTok.This is because she is able to gain the appeal of the younger generation.
Her music is also an example of how music has become more vulgar, and less creative, since she uses the same beat and flow, and her lyrics contain many vulgar and sexual aspects.
Older music compared to now used to have a complex and deep meaning. Today, that isn’t the case anymore. Artists were more passionate about their music back then than they are now. Micheal Jackson, for example, made songs with complex meaning and feeling.
“Music is so different than it is from when I was growing up. Back then, it was real and it meant something. Today, music is great for entertainment, but it is lacking soul,” said Jamaican musician Ziggy Marley.
In 2012 five scientists from the Spanish National Research Council, conducted a study on the evolution of Western music over a 50 year period, from 1955 to 2010. They compared and analyzed over 450,000 songs and found out what changed and stayed the same.
The study found that music has become more homogenized, meaning music has become more similar and less creative. Specifically they found out that the pitch transitions between the melodies have become more and more similar over the years.
Joan Serrà, a scientist who participated in the study, said, “We obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations – roughly speaking chords plus melodies – has consistently diminished in the last 50 years.”
Overall, music is gradually getting worse, especially in this generation. Older music is much better because of its quality, authenticity, and creativity. Modern music is now bland and boring, containing too much vulgarity and sexual language.
