The Fuquay-Varina Bengals mens and womens teams made a strong impression at their latest tournament on Dec. 13 and 14, showcasing determination, skill and progress as the season heats up.
Both teams competed against tough competition, with several athletes earning notable placements. The tournament served as a critical benchmark in the season, giving coaches and wrestlers a chance to gauge their strengths and areas for improvement.
Strong performances highlighted the Bengals’ efforts throughout their tournament, including senior and Captain Nehemiah Ortega. He placed third in the 126 weight class, cementing his reputation as an impressive student athlete for the team.
Reflecting on the tournament, Ortega said, “The team did pretty good overall. A lot of guys were very close to placing and they scored good points for the team. This just means when no one else places, I’ve got to win my matches more dominantly, so that bad calls by the ref won’t even affect the outcome of the team.”
Ortega has also just reached an impressive milestone, surpassing 100 career wins, a testament to his hard work and dedication to his team and sport.
The women’s wrestling team also had two other wrestlers place. Freshman Madelin Lusk achieved third place in the 165 weight class. Freshman Kaitlyn Hatt also had an impressive match, placing fourth in the 185 weight class.
Senior Zion Warren, the women’s team captain, reflected on their performance at the Joe Nassif Tournament at Rosewood High School in Greensboro.
“The FVHS women’s team performed pretty well this past weekend. Watching the girls place and noticing them put the tips I’ve given them to use was amazing,” said Warren. “It’s always good to encourage one another at tournaments, and despite the hardcore screaming we do to our teammates during their matches, it’s all love.”
This tournament provided a valuable opportunity for the wrestlers to showcase and build on their strengths, demonstrating not only physical power but also mental toughness. Ortega noted that one of the biggest challenges during these tournaments is maintaining a positive mindset.
“It’s so long and tiring being there all day, especially if you’re not performing your best,” said Ortega. “The team keeps each other going by encouraging each other and showing up for everyone’s matches. Having a supportive environment is what helps us thrive.”
The Bengals’ progress this season has been evident with athletes refining their skills and strategies on the mat.
` “The team just has to work harder,” Ortega said. “They are able to keep up with these guys if they give it their all and apply what they have learned.”
Looking ahead, the wrestlers are focused on their goals. For Ortega, that means aiming to win states or at least place, while continuing to put Fuquay-Varina on the map. Warren also emphasized growth, noting how the teams’ performances each week give their coach insights into their areas for improvement.
Ortega said, “It’s pretty cool being able to show that Fuquay isn’t an easy win.”
While wrestling is often seen as an individual sport, the team aspect of our Bengals is what pushes these athletes to excel. Whether it’s offering encouragement during a tough match or working together to improve techniques in practice, the team’s bond has created an environment where every wrestler can thrive.
As the season continues, the Bengals are proving that hard work, resilience and teamwork are the keys to their success, on and off the mat. So show up and show out tonight for their next match at 5:30 p.m. at Cleveland.
