The school now has new chickens. The chicken’s names are Georgia and Freya, but why did we get chickens?
Agriculture teacher Kimberly Moomy said, “I wanted the students to be able to see, touch, and learn how to take care of them.” This shows the students how to care for a living organism in a classroom and their responsibilities.
Sophomore Alex Furr said, “They are really cute, and they purr when you hold them and when they eat.” This shows how much this student likes and cares about the chickens.
Our chickens at FVHS are an interesting thing to have here. One is a girl and the other one is not a guarantee, but we could have a boy. The chickens were donated by students at Fuquay-Varina High School and are Rhode Island Red chickens. Students had a vote between having rabbits in the class or having chickens in the class, and most of the students voted to have chickens.
These chickens are a cross mix between Malay and brown-leg corn. They are the state bird of Rhode Island. They can thrive in cold and warm climates and produce eggs annually.
Moomy said, “They are around 18 to 20 weeks old, and are supposed to be the best egg layers.” They can lay around five to six eggs a week and 300 a year.
Moomy is planning a meet and greet in the future for our community to meet the chickens.
