Jobs play an important role in this world because it helps give services to others, helps one earn money, helps us learn new people and more. Sometimes it is debatable whether a job should be given to someone with skills or a degree. One of the most common places where this debate takes place is in restaurants.
One example of a job you don’t need a degree for is being a cook. Just because one does not have a degree in culinary does not mean they do not have skills for the job. When someone is receiving a service, what matters to them is the product of what they are paying for. Therefore not every single job should be determined by whether someone has a degree in the field they are going to work for. Some people have skills and have worked in certain areas for a long time but simply can not afford going to school for a degree. Just because they can’t afford it does not mean that they can’t perform a good service.
“I think that depending on the job it’s better to have someone that is skilled than someone that has a degree. SInce some people simply just can’t afford earning a degree but have passion and skill for their work,” said junior Edwin Montez.
When it comes to places that involve health care and cosmetic treatments, yes you want the person that will attend you to be skilled, but it is also important if these people have some sort of degree to prove that they also took their time to learn things. Due to these being sensitive topics and it could possibly harm the customer, a degree should be required for this type of job. Also when it comes to working in customer service, there are always some people that prefer someone with a degree.
One of the most sensitive jobs is babysitting because you have to take care of another’s life and supervise them diligently. The job of babysitting is a great example of skill being more important than a degree. Although someone may have a degree in child care, there are lots of people that do not have a degree but can do a better job than those with a degree. Some factors that play into this is personality or having kids of their own that gives them more knowledge and skill than someone with a degree. This does not mean that a person with a degree will not perform well, it’s about who has more skill.
People that are learning to do a job in comparison to someone with a degree is more likely to mess up. Whether someone has a degree or not, anyone can make a mistake. Human error can be from you spelling a word wrong, forgetting stuff, or simply not calculating something well and more. An example of human error is when it comes to driving. According to attorney Boyce Holleman 94% of car crashes are due to human error.
This shows that no matter how experienced you can be in something, we are prone to make a mistake. According to Ellwood City Ledger, humans make around three to six mistakes every hour, an average of 500 mistakes a day. So although a person without a degree makes a mistake, it does not mean that they are not capable of holding their job title.
Overall having skills for whatever job you will be performing is critical because it will change the experience and the outcome of whatever job you are doing.
