Many people argue what the best number of classes for a day of school is. School days last up to seven hours each, and it’s where students and teachers spend most of their time during the school week. The most common schedules are four classes a semester, eight classes a day, and A/B schedule. Although each schedule’s benefits depend on the different kinds of students .
The four classes a semester schedule usually changed after 15 weeks with classes lasting 90 minutes. For some students and teachers it reduces stress, focus, and more engagement. Only having 4 classes each semester allows students to focus more on their classes, have less homework, and more time to discuss in class. This schedule allows teachers to have less students work to grade in comparison to an eight class schedule.
“Some days we go to all eight to do make-up work, and it makes me feel tiresome,” said Ashley Guardado from Garner Magnet High School.
An eight class schedule has classes that usually last 45 to 50 minutes. This schedule is great for some students because it keeps them in rotation and they don’t have to sit for long periods of time. It gives students the ability to learn at a steady pace and not overwhelming them with information.
“I prefer eight classes for sure in comparison to where I used to go. Having four classes may be likable to some people but I personally prefer the eight class schedule due to shorter classes. You don’t have to be sitting in one class for a long period of time as well as making time feel like it passes by quicker,” said junior Rylee Montgomery from Chattahoochee High School.
An A&B schedule is where students attend four of their classes one day and the next day they attend the remaining four. They are in a constant state of rotating classes throughout the week which can make some students feel less bored. This schedule gives the student time to learn compared to only hanging four classes a semester.
“Having the A&B schedule gives me more time to do my work and have the whole school year to learn our subject. It’s definitely better in comparison to just one semester of learning,” said junior Ashley Guardado from Garner Magnet High School.
In conclusion, school schedules are one of the many important factors in shaping students’ experiences, achievements, development and more. Each schedule has its own unique features and its benefits depending on the students.
