In the past year, AI has become an integrated piece of technological programming in many apps and websites. There are many varieties of AI tools. There are chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta AI, as well as search engines like Google AI Overviews and many more. They can be used to generate answers to questions and are essentially a helpful tool to solve problems in everyday life.
“I know people use it and don’t even think twice about it, but I think it compromises the integrity of whatever you are doing,” said junior Paisley Koch.
AI has been the cause of a lot of controversy around accountability. Since the release of ChatGPT on Instagram and many other tools on the internet, there has been an uptake in AI generated essays and school work. Many teachers have noticed the difference between a student’s actual work and an AI generated piece. AI generated work has been the most prevalent in English classes.
“The more we rely on it (AI), the less we learn and grow,” said Koch.
However, AI has not just affected schoolwork, it has also affected the art communities. Many have mixed feelings about having AI generate high quality pieces instead of an artist’s own two hands. Some think that the use of AI discredits those with real talent. On top of that, AI generated art often gets warped and is notorious for messing up specific poses and placements.
“It is so easy to ask it (AI) questions and have it do things for you, which makes it really convenient, but I think it is also very damaging to our society because of its rapid development.” said Koch.
Even though AI has negative views surrounding its productivity and its uses, it is a useful tool to find how to answer questions from other people, gives good editing advice, finds descriptive words that you would never believe were in the English language in the first place, and many more. AI is not a bad thing, but it can be viewed that way because of how it is being used. In just this year alone, AI has become a part of everyday life for many people. AI is not a bad tool, it is actually very useful. It is important that it is used responsibly and for the right reasons.
