Senior skip day might seem like a harmless tradition. It is a day for seniors to ditch their Chromebooks and escape for the day. Some seniors take a trip to the beach, while others use it as a day to catch up on sleep. But this year, a lack of organization from the OC – the student group responsible for planning these events – has left many seniors feeling that it’s more trouble than it’s worth. With unclear plans and last-minute changes, the OC’s disorganization has created more stress than celebration, leaving students disappointed
Without clear communication and structured planning, students risk missing valuable class time and falling behind on assignments. The OC’s disorganization this year has made it worse, with some students not even knowing the date until the last minute.
FVHS graduate Rime Nabih said, “Last year when I skipped on senior skip day, I came back with double the amount of work than I had before.”
Teachers, too, feel the effect of the OC’s poor planning. When a large portion of the class is missing, teachers often have to adjust to lesson plans or reteach the material to make sure everyone stays on track. This disrupts the flow of learning and disrupts the teacher’s lesson plans. Teachers make lessons months in advance, so reteaching a lesson causes the entire class to fall behind.
On the flip side, senior skip day, regardless if the OC announces it at the last minute, allows seniors to enjoy a well deserved break from school after years of hard work. Whether they are making memories at the beach with their friends or catching up on their sleep, celebrating the milestone of senior year outweighs the consequences.
