Are fast food collabs really worth the hype?

Pop culture collaborations with fast-food chains often generate huge excitement, drawing in fans and customers. In October alone we’ve seen so many drops that should’ve been cool, like Wendy’s SpongeBob SquarePants Krabby Patty and Burger King’s Addams Family meal. They sound amazing, right? However when the item was released, they turned out to be very disappointing for customers.

The Wendy’s Sponge Bob Square Pants collab promised a “Krabby Patty.” But all they gave us was a regular burger with a sauce they called “Krabby Patty Sauce.” Considering the popularity of the show, this felt like a missed opportunity. Fans hoped for a unique take that matched the fun spirit of the Krusty Krab.

Senior Aya Aani said, “I was really excited before trying the Krabby Patty, maybe an actual unique patty or flavor. Instead, I paid extra for a plain burger with an average sauce.”

Then there’s the Addams Family collection at Burger King, released on Oct. 10. It includes churro fries with a chocolate sauce, a chocolate shake with a cake batter swirl, and Wednesday’s Purple Whopper.

Like the Wendy’s Krabby Patty, the Whopper was just a regular burger that was purple, nothing too special about it. While the purple bun adds a spooky touch, fans expected something more than a color change.

Senior Laniaya Glasgow said, “I don’t know what I was expecting to be honest, but it was definitely not that.”

Even though these items might seem disappointing to some people, not everyone is looking for an entirely new meal; some just enjoy the nostalgia that these fast food collabs bring.

Aani said, “Yeah, it’s disappointing, but it’s also just for fun. It’s not like we expect gourmet food from fast food places.”
