One of the unsung heroes of FVHS sports is the womens golf team. Womens golf consistently wins matches and have won two conference championships in a row.

The Bengals win with ease, having not lost a match since getting second place in the 2022 conference championship. Since then, they have gone on a historic run, winning 18 consecutive matches, culminating in a back-to-back conference title.

This year’s team was led by senior Kaitlynn Barnes, who was awarded Greater Neuse River Conference Golfer of the Year.

The Lady Bengals made the regional tournament which was held at Bentwinds, their home course. They placed fifth at this season’s regional. They expected a high placement all season.

“We have a number of girls who shoot very low scores, and we have home course advantage,” said senior Allison Field.

This performance has led to a state playoff berth for two members of the team and a chance at their first ever state title.

Field and Barnes are the two golfers that will represent FVHS at the state tournament. This duo has a great record during the regular season and will definitely do well at states.

“I’m feeling good going into states because of the season I have had so far. I think I am going to make it far based off of my scoring average and mindset,” said Barnes.

The state tournament starts Oct. 28 at Pinehurst, and the champion will be crowned the next day, Oct. 29.
