Students cheating in High School

Academic dishonesty is a common practice in high school, whether students use AI, plagiarism, or copy work from other peers. Many high school students have engaged in academic dishonesty at some point in high school, when compared to other grade levels.

The rise of cheating throughout the years has become prominent. Many high school teachers and administrators have caught students using an AI called ChatGPT. ChatGPT was released Nov 30, 2022. ChatGPT is capable of writing impressive essays  and solving science and math problems.

ChatGPT’s popularity and profound resources have encouraged most students to cheat. According to a new Pew Research survey around one in five teenagers have admitted to using ChatGPT. The survey reveals 19 percent of all U.S. teens, who have heard about ChatGPT, have cheated. The study includes the percent of teenagers who have admitted they have cheated, including a quarter of juniors and seniors, 17 percent of freshmen  and  sophomores, and 12 percent of 7th and 8th graders have admitted cheating in some form.

Donald McCabe conducted a study on the percentage of cheaters in high school. In his study he created surveys of over 70,000 students at over 24 high schools in the United States. The survey revealed that 64 percent of students admitted to cheating on tests, 58 percent plagiarized, and 95 percent performed some type of cheating.

Donald McCabe said, “There’s a generation that’s willing to do anything they have to do to get the job done.”

Many students who cheat don’t take into account the consequences they will face. You may receive a failing grade and have cheating allegations on your school record, which affects college. Cheating affects students’ learning. Cheaters aren’t fully understanding the material, which results in falling behind and poor grades.

There are many ways students can avoid academic dishonesty.  Students should pay attention in class, take notes, ask for help when they need it, and avoid procrastinating on assignments.
