“Transformers One” is the latest and best entry in the Transformers franchise. This time the film takes place on the home planet of the Transformers, Cybertron, and three billion years before the 2007 “Transformers” film.
This is the first theatrically animated “Transformers” film since 1987, and the animation has greatly evolved. The movie uses an animation style that was popularized by the 2018 film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” The technique puts 2d animation on top of CGI models to give the characters a cell-shaded effect.
“For $75 million it was very good animation quality,” said senior Krishna Shah.
The main characters in the movie are Optimus Prime and Megatron before they were the well known war generals that they are now. In this movie Optimus Prime is known as Orion Pax and Megatron is known as D-16. The duo are friends that work as slaves in the mines. Other than Optimus Prime and Megatron, the movie features other notable Transformers such as Bumblebee, Elita, Starscream, Soundwave and Shockwave.
Peter Cullen has voiced Optimus Prime for over 30 years, but this is the first major installment of the franchise that replaces him. In this film Chris Hemsworth voices Optimus Prime to fit the younger version of the character. The movie is filled with celebrity voices like Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi and Brian Tyree Henry.
The plot of the movie follows Orion Pax and D-16 learning about their planet’s dark history and teaming together to try and fix it. One of the most interesting parts of the movie is D-16’s transformation into a villain. Another thing that this movie did that hasn’t been done in the last 20 years is that this movie features no human characters, something that has been a major complaint about the live-action films.
“There were no humans in this movie, which is something I’ve been wanting to see for a long time,” said Shah.
Overall, “Transformers One” is everything a Transformers fan could want out of a movie. It has cool action scenes that utilize the Autobot’s abilities, good animation and a story that is sure to make fans happy.
