Stress is something that is unavoidable. When stress hits it may overwhelm someone and affect their mood, work, eating habits, and more. Being able to manage your stress is important because when you hit high levels of stress it can affect your physical and mental health. Stress can cause depression, anxiety, your brain to fog up your mind and damage your cells. If you want to focus on managing your stress, you will want to focus on your thoughts, emotions, environment and schedule.
Identifying the root cause of your stress will help narrow down what type of management you need to do. When you focus on these areas and make yourself feel more comfortable where you are, talking about your feelings will help make a smoother and easier transition to managing your feelings. There are various coping strategies and methods to try. Some of those are taking a walk, yoga, finding social support, time management, eating healthy and more.
Taking a walk and yoga increases your endorphins which are chemical hormones that your body will release when it is in distress or pain. This hormone helps relieve pain and stress, improve your state of mind, help you think clearer and make decisions on things you might be worrying about. Managing your schedule and organizing your surroundings can help clear your mind and make you feel more in control. When you feel that you’re in control of a situation, it will make you feel that you have a sense of self, you will be happier, you will feel more balanced and you will be in control of your feelings.
It is important to talk about your feelings so you can avoid detachment and isolation. Detachment can deprive you of meaningful connections, and mental or physical distress. Avoiding these things can help you see things from new perspectives, feel calmer and build healthier relationships. It will always have a negative effect on you if you avoid talking or letting out feelings because it can cause emotional buildup, overreacting, weight gain, anxiety, headaches and more.
Emotional build up can affect your relationships with people and deteriorate your mental health. Suppressing your emotions can usually lead to you acting out impetuously on someone who is not at fault. These precipitous actions can lead to either you and others getting hurt physically or emotionally.
“Managing stress helps clear the mind and helps you think more clearly and make better decisions,” said sophomore Iva Ramos.
