How to survive a zombie apocalypse has been an age long question that a variety of different types of media have tried to answer in the past. Surviving a zombie apocalypse requires basic survival instincts, self defense, leadership, adaptability, and many more survival skills. If a zombie apocalypse happened in Fuquay-Varina, would FVHS students have what it takes to survive?
The initial outbreak is where some of the most important decisions you have to make lie. What you decide during the outbreak can determine whether you live or die.
Senior Leighton Catton states that during the initial outbreak he would “head up north because due to scientific reasons, zombies tend to freeze in cold temperatures.”
However, some FVHS students said they would do the complete opposite.
“I’d take my family and probably go more south because there are less people around,” said senior Hayden Douglass.
While Douglass and Catton thought it was best to travel, some students thought it was best to stay home and protect themselves.
“I’d get a bunch of tools and hide,” said senior Sydney King.
One of the next steps in surviving the zombie apocalypse is to decide if you want to form alliances with other survivors. Forming an alliance is important because it determines whether you want to be isolated or with other people.
“I would call up Chris Papagianneris, and I would hop in his van,” said senior Gabe Frechette.
A lot of students said they wouldn’t trust anyone other than their family.
Senior Sydney Griffin said she would only trust her family and friends, and King said she would only form an alliance with her family and not even with her best friend.
Douglass said he would possibly form an alliance with other survivors but “Probably not because humans are very interesting things, so I wouldn’t trust anyone.”
When you’re in an alliance, you’re bound to come across disagreements with your allies.
Senior Jake McIntyre said that if he was in disagreement with his allies he would get rid of them “depending on what the disagreement is on,” while senior Cooper Willis said “I would just leave.”
The resources that you choose to grab are important because those are the materials that you use to survive.
Willis said, “I would grab all sorts of guns and survival stuff like first aid, water, and food.”
Additionally, Frechette said, “We would probably hit up the Fuquay Walmart.”
The main threat in the zombie apocalypse is the zombies. Zombies are brain dead corpses that have an appetite for human brains.
Catton said he would defend himself against zombies with “long-range weapons like spears and long-range swords and strike for the legs.” Junior Laurel Feldner said she would use “whatever is closest like baseball bats and long-range weapons” if she could get her hands on them.
If a zombie manages to bite you, you have a short amount of time before you turn into a zombie.
Frechette said he would “accept it then turn into a zombie and go on a rampage,” while Douglass said he would amputate his arm.
Besides basic survival skills, it is important to maintain good mental health as well. Keeping a good mental health leads you to be happy and stay calm.
Willis said he would keep a good mental health by talking to people and not shut anyone out. Feldner thinks she wouldn’t have time to keep her mental health but would at least “keep my mind off of it and talk to other people.”
After the apocalypse has settled down, one of the next logical steps would be to try and rebuild a new society.
Catton says he would want to build a small society but that “democracy would not be able to work in this new world.”
Surviving the zombie apocalypse would be no easy task. It requires perseverance, hard work, and determination. But FVHS students seem to have what it takes to survive.
