Fuquay-Varina High School is hosting special school events in the next few weeks. The Homecoming dance is Sept. 28, and it kicks off spirit week which is Sept. 30 to Oct. 4. That all leads to the big Homecoming football game against Cleveland on Friday, Oct. 4.
Spirit week has special themed days for students to dress accordingly. Monday is Zoom Day, and students can wear formal tops and casual bottoms like most people did during the pandemic. Tuesday is Twin Day where students match with a teacher or friend. Wednesday takes the idea from the movie “Mean Girls,” so students should wear pink. Thursday is a teacher work day, and on Friday students will dress up in their Bengal attire. Freshmen will wear white, sophomores will wear gray, juniors will wear orange, and seniors will wear black.
The pep rally is Oct. 4 during fourth period so all of the school can cheer on the football team for their game. This event is supposed to bring the school together.
Student Council adviser Shannon O’Brien said that she hopes to see “a lot of school spirit.” She said that the Student Council is trying to get students excited about the Homecoming game and the school year.
Students will work together to earn spirit sticks. Dancers and gymnasts will do many performances, and there is an opportunity to pie a teacher in the face. O’Brien explained that they will also introduce the fall and winter sports teams, including our football team.
O’Brien also said that the Homecoming dance will have backdrops for photos and LED balloon stands “to capture your moment at Homecoming.”
The winners of the senior court will be announced at the Homecoming game. Students will vote on the senior court. The senior options are Jordan Enwereuzor, Ella Wachtel, Jaya Cureton, and Lucas Roten. The junior court is Violetta Stratis and Luke Hessing. The sophomores are Jackson Sattelberg and Brooke Fuquay. The freshman court is Aiden Russell and Elaina Cox. Olivia Stoll and Allan Boos are on the ECS Homecoming court.
Brooke Fuquay said she was surprised that she got nominated.
“I wasn’t planning on [being on the court] but it’s going to be a fun experience. Not many people get to do it,” said Fuquay.
The Homecoming courts are a special tradition that schools have to celebrate the select few nominated by their fellow students. Many students dream to be Homecoming king or queen.
Fuquay said, “It will be fun to walk out with my parents.”
The week of fun festivities will end with the Homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. The Homecoming dance is Saturday, Sept. 28 from 7-9 p.m.
