The Fuquay Varina Bengals mens soccer lost their game on Wednesday against Leesville Road 4-1, losing their fourth game in a row, to move to 2-6 on the season. Leesville Road scored 2 goals in each half of the game. Fuquay Varina scored its lone goal in the second half of the game.
Evan Kramer, a senior, who plays midfielder for the Bengals, said that the loss was, “Disappointing. We thought that we should have played better.”
The team has struggled on defense so far this season, sporting a goal differential of -26 for the season, and have scored only 8 goals in 9 games so far this season.
When asked, Kraemer said that he thought that the team will get better, and said that he thought that “We will get better when conference play begins.”
The team then followed up the disappointing performance with a 8-2 loss against Broughton High School, the second time this year Fuquay has allowed 8 or more goals.
“We have to play better. Eventually we will get better,” Kraemer said.
If Fuquay wants to play better, they need to focus on defense and limit the goals, because the team will not be able to keep up if their opponents score 8 goals in every game. They could also play more physically in the six-yard box. They should return to the tactics that brought them success in the Holly Springs game, which Fuquay won 1-0. If the team is to get better, they must play better defense, which they are capable of doing well, as shown by the victory against Holly Springs 1-0.
Fuquay-Varina played its next game at home against Corinth Holders High School on Sept. 17, to open up conference play this year. The Pirates come into the first conference game with three wins, five losses, and one tie. Fuquay came into the game on Tuesday with two wins and seven losses, as they hoped to get off to a quick start in conference play.
Fuquay Varina played a better game; however, they lost to the Pirates 2-0. Fuquay will play Cleveland High School on Thursday, Sept. 19, as the team hopes to win its first conference game of the season.
