Fuquay-Varina is growing in size, and this leads to more students entering our school. Many have noticed that the freshmen class of FVHS has gotten bigger. There are currently 511 freshmen in a school with a total of 1,873 students.

As of 2024, the population of Fuquay Varina is 46,907. This town is growing at a rate of 7.05% per year. We had a population of 34,547 at the last census, which was only four years ago.

Wake County is growing because of our reliable school system and housing options. With this growth, schools will get more students.

Freshman Mariam El Baroudi said that her classes do not actually feel packed. She does notice when she eats in the cafeteria that there are a lot of people. El Baroudi is still “trying to adjust” to high school.

“I don’t really notice,” said El Baroudi about her class sizes.

World history teacher Jared Smith said, “Usually [the class sizes have] been pretty steady for the last couple of years, but this is the first year it went down just a little bit.”

Smith explained that the world history department had gotten a new teacher and it helped with his class sizes and made things more manageable.

Over the years, public school teachers have just gotten used to having 27 to 35 kids in their classes, but when a school can hire more teachers, it lets teachers have smaller numbers.

“I do appreciate the smaller class sizes. I can help students a little better one-on-one,” Smith said.

Smith said that all he needed was enough chairs and desks, but not so many that you can’t walk around in the classroom. He wants there to be enough space in his room for group work and stations.

FVHS is growing, but adding more teachers will help students continue to get a personalized education.
