“Beetlejuice” has been a cult classic for over 35 years and Warner Bros. has finally released the long awaited sequel titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” on Sept. 5 amidst the Halloween season. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was met with a mostly positive response from general audiences and critics. However, a common complaint with the film is that it had a lot more potential and could have been better than the film we received.
“The storylines were short and left a lot to be desired,” said senior Brayden Bolger.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has a lot of different storylines going on at the same time. Some of the plot lines feel like they could be removed from the film because they never amount to
anything. It wouldn’t change the story at all. This leads to the film feeling rushed and anti-climatic in the third act.
“There were some storylines that didn’t add much to the story and got cut short,” said Bolger.
The movie does have a lot going for it. Director Tim Burton gives the film a whimsical feeling and the practical effects help give it the same tone as the original.
“I thought the visuals were pretty cool, there were a lot of different styles and it was interesting to look at the whole time,” said Bolger.
Michael Keaton returns to play the titular Beetlejuice and his performance hasn’t changed at all. Everytime Keaton is on screen he steals the show. The rest of the cast is also good, with another standout being Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson. The movie is filled with comedic moments that are sure to have viewers chuckling at the hijinx that ensues in the film.
Bolger said “ I don’t think it’s as good as the original. They almost got there but weren’t quite there.”
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has a lot of things going for it, but due to a few major flaws, the film isn’t able to reach the same level as the original.
