The options for this year’s Homecoming theme sparked controversy as students were asked to vote for their favorite. One in particular, Disney’s “Descendants,” was the subject of much debate around school.
“Descendants” is a film franchise about the children of popular Disney characters, in particular, the villains. With the first movie’s release in 2015, many students grew up watching it. “Descendants” has become iconic, full of many well-known characters, such as Mal and her purple hair and outfits, or Uma’s teal and pirate-themed looks.
“I thought it’d be really creative because you could do a lot more and dress up as characters you like,” said senior Tahlia Crosland, who voted for “Descendants” as a theme initially. “You could’ve been a lot more descriptive with your ideas for how you’re dressing.”
If “Descendants” had been picked for this year’s Homecoming theme, it would’ve allowed students that wanted a creative outlet to express themselves through a well-loved movie franchise. With colorful characters and upbeat songs, “Descendants” as a theme could have filled the gym with recognizable decorations and allowed students to adapt their outfits to a theme full of childhood nostalgia and fun.
Other students disagreed, feeling that the theme was a bit cheesy.
“It felt like they were trying to find a way to be modern, instead of finding a theme that would match a nice Homecoming,” said senior Jordan Enwereuzor. He, as well as other students who voted against Descendants as a Homecoming theme, wanted something more timeless for a dance theme.
“For our senior year… we want a more serious theme. I love ‘Descendants,’ just not for Homecoming,” Enwereuzor said.
“Starry Night” won the vote for this year’s Homecoming theme, but it’s unfair to classify “Descendants” as a bad option. If it had been picked, it would have allowed for fun, themed outfits, nostalgic music and colorful decorations that could have made a memorable night for the students attending.
