Precalculus is offered here at FVHS as an AP class but it may not always be counted as a college credit due to the fact that it may not be considered a college class or may not be provided at many colleges, making it only a high school credit. Even if precalculus might not be counted as a college credit, it is still beneficial when taking other calculus classes.
“I feel that if I take it and it isn’t counted, it would make me feel as if I took it for nothing. But hopefully it would still benefit me in some sort of way,” said junior Kailyn Wilding.
Precalculus may not count as a credit, but it can still be beneficial for future classes in college. Precalculus is helpful to help students pursue a higher level of mathematics, which can help in careers like engineering, physics, economics, computer science and the medical field.
“Overall I feel that I’m doing good in this class. I plan to take AP calculus in senior year. I know the class will definitely help since I want to go into the medical field,” said junior Andre Amyradakis.
The medical field will most likely always require a type of calculus class because it can lead to a better comprehension of chemistry and physics. Those two subjects are what contribute to a significant portion of the medical college admission test.
“Even if I were to go to a college and it wasn’t counted as a credit, I still think it would help the chances of me being accepted,” said Amyradakis.
According to the College Board blog, students who take precalculus in high school are 155 percent more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree, a higher boost in degree completion compared to those students who take algebra two, trigonometry and calculus. Precalculus tends to open more pathways to success in STEM fields and provides a good foundation for calculus. Taking this class can show that you are well prepared for college level work and increase chances of being accepted.
Precalculus is a course that helps set a foundation for other mathematics and helps to obtain a better comprehension on calculus essential topics and helps in many STEM field careers. This class helps students obtain a better understanding, and it also helps them grow more. Even if it may not be counted as a college credit, it is beneficial and crucial for certain careers.
