Film adaptations of books have always been a controversial topic. Beloved books being turned into blockbuster films and shows can leave fans in disappointment over the vision not being brought to life.
Some people think film versions aren’t as good at selling a story. Books are longer, allowing for more descriptive words and storytelling.
However, when adaptations are made that stay true to the books, fans tend to like them more.
“I like the show ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events.’ It doesn’t try to move away from the books which makes it very entertaining,” said freshman Jackson Page.
It can be very difficult to turn a book into a movie or show, especially with how specific certain details can be.
“I think the hardest part is translating words into a whole visual world with actors that have to perfectly portray the characters,” said Page.
Actors are a very important part of films, and bad casting choices can affect the opinions of fans.
“The Percy Jackson movies weren’t realistic to the plot or the character development of the books at all,” said sophomore Gibson Pardue-Schultz.
Freshman Paige Maxfield agreed, saying, “My favorite book that was turned into a movie is ‘The Color Purple,’ but the movies weren’t accurate to the characters’ wants or needs from the story.”
One thing movies are known for is being able to convey complex emotions and moods. Although, with books being more descriptive, not every detail can transfer over to a film adaptation.
“Although I think the movie did well at making a sad yet engaging film, the books still did it better,” said Maxfield.
Because of the increase of movies and TV shows in the modern day, books are starting to become less impactful than they used to be, even though most people prefer book versions. However, creating cinema based on these books can help keep the stories alive for future generations.
