FVHS students upset about lack of hockey team

While we have interested players, there are currently no hockey teams for FVHS.

Students at FVHS seem to be wondering why FVHS does not have a hockey team yet. Is it because there’s not enough hockey players? Is it because we don’t have the correct equipment for it? Could it be the fact that hockey is one of the most dangerous sports?

With high schools like Middle Creek, Apex, Cary, Green Hope, Southeast Raleigh, Garner, Cardinal Gibbons, Trinity, Enloe, Panther Creek, Wake Forest, and South Wake having hockey teams, it doesn’t make sense for FVHS to not have a hockey team.

Most people believe that FVHS does not have a hockey team because the school does not have an ice rink. This doesn’t make sense because many schools, like Middle Creek, don’t have an ice rink to play on, yet they have a hockey team.

Also, since FVHS cares a lot about their students’ safety, it would make sense that they don’t want the school to have a hockey team because there are roughly 20,000 hockey-related injuries yearly according to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Even though most hockey teams around the area are club teams rather than high school teams, it still doesn’t make sense that FVHS doesn’t have a hockey club.

“Yeah, it’s a bummer that the school doesn’t have a hockey team. It [stinks] because even if we have a hockey team in the future, I won’t be able to play since I’m a senior,” said senior Jacob Campbell.

With all that being said, students that play hockey at FVHS are disappointed that the school does not have a team.

“I’ve been playing hockey for about three years now, and I am a little disappointed that the school does not have a team. I am approaching my junior year, so I still have a little more time to hope that the school creates a team so I can get to play,” said sophomore Jude Dixon.

In conclusion, it is not fair for students at FVHS to not be able to play the sport they want. If students want to play hockey outside of school, they can play at the Wake Competition Center in Raleigh or join the NC Raptors Hockey Club in Raleigh.
