The Spring Dance was canceled on Feb. 28, 2024. Last year, it seemed many people were asking for more dances to be held, yet many of the dances that the Student Council has proposed have been failures among students.
The most important part of hosting events such as dances is student participation. Students not buying tickets will mean no revenue being brought in and this will lead to the dances and events being called off because the expenses can’t be covered. This is exactly the case for the Spring Dance that was supposed to be held on March 2, 2024.
According to Student Council, less than 50 tickets had been sold for the dance, leading to the cancellation of it. Although Student Council was the group planning the dance, administration decided to officially cancel the dance.
“The Spring Dance had to be canceled because there were less than 50 tickets sold. The revenue needed to cover the cost of the DJ, the SRO, paying the custodians overtime, and the costs associated with any snacks or beverages would far exceed what the cost of tickets purchased would bring in,” said Principal Mike James.
Multiple students agreed that they didn’t buy tickets because they weren’t informed well enough.
“I didn’t buy tickets because it wasn’t advertised well, and I wasn’t prepared for it,” said freshman Campbell Harrison.
When sophomore Kensley Harrison was asked if she had bought tickets, she expressed that she wasn’t aware there was a dance in the first place.
This doesn’t mean dances aren’t wanted by students though.
“I like being with my friends and dressing up,” said senior Amelia Stoll, a student who had bought a ticket to the Spring Dance before it was canceled.
Dances are an excellent way to get students involved with the school as well as with other students. They provide a welcoming environment and a fun way to get the true “high school experience.”
Previous dances, like Homecoming, were very successful with a high attendance rate and overall good reviews from students who had attended. Though it wasn’t the most extravagant dance, it still created many memories throughout the night.
The cancellation of the dance led to concerns about future dances being held, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. Student Council still plans on future dances being held, but ultimately, it’s up to the students. Low student turnouts will make Student Council think students don’t want to dance at all and could lead to future cancellations if costs aren’t covered again.
“I hope this doesn’t impact future dances because it was fun to plan the dance,” said sophomore Student Council member Kylie Judd.
The cancellation of this Spring Dance is an important reminder that the students of FVHS have a large impact on the events held at FVHS and shows the importance of voicing our opinions.
