During the summer, auditions were held at Fuquay-Varina High School for the dance team. This included incoming freshmen. SInce they all met over the summer, they have had a lot of time to adjust to their new team and dance together.
“We definitely had to get used to dancing with each other, since there were so many new people. We had to figure out and work with how other people danced,” junior Jordan Enwereuzor said.
Junior Ja’Myah Burt, who is a current member of the team, said, “It’s a lot of different personalities and stuff. It’s cool to see the diversity and how people work together. I’m really excited. The team has a lot of energy so it’s going to be a fun year for sure.”
Dance is an expressive and difficult sport. It involves all parts of the body, moving it to the sound and beat of the music.
“You will be bad when you start,” Enwereuzor said, “It’s a guarantee. But what is beautiful about dance is that over the years you can truly see your improvement. If you really work toward your goals, you will see growth for sure.”
Since the team performs during halftime, the dancers have some time to kill.
“We have some unhinged moments for sure, but that’s what makes it so interesting.” Burt said, “Our team is weird, but it’s a good weird.”
The team is very close. They have a familial aspect about them.
“I think everyone on the team has found like, their person. They have those people that they connect with really well,” Burt explained.
The team is motivated, driven, and works very well together. They strive for perfection, making sure every move is done with purpose.
With many newer members, the dancers that have been on the team for a while have much to teach their new teammates.
“With me being the only boy on the team, it’s easy to fade to the background and not have my voice be heard. I guess I’ve learned to take a leadership role in that sense. I am always going to ask something or voice what I think needs improvement. I want the new dancers to be able to voice their opinion because they are on the team too. These decisions affect them as dancers,” Enwereuzor said.
Due to issues involving a knee injury last school year, Burt was not able to perform with her teammates. She was still able to cheer them on from the sidelines.
“I felt pretty useless. All of my friends and teammates were performing without me. But I realize now that it was really all God’s timing. He has a plan and purpose for everything that goes on in our lives. God gave me this talent, and I want to use it to share his goodness with people around me. With the new dancers I really just want them to see the love and light of Jesus in me. My injury is a part of my testimony, and someone out there can relate to it,” said Burt.
“The school can definitely expect amazing shows and energy during halftime. It’s like a reward to finally share what we have learned and perform alongside our teammates. We have definitely grown closer, and I can’t wait to see what’s next,” said Enwereuzor.
