The Writers Guild of America has been undergoing a strike since May 2 of this year. However, on Sept. 27, 2023, at 12:01 a.m. the strike ended. Since it started, many shows and movies have been postponed to compensate for the legal activities and the loss of many writers.
This strike started because of a labor dispute in the WGA. Writers were arguing against unfair payment and demanding mandatory staffing in their TV writing rooms. They were also demanding residual payments if the movie they helped write became a hit. Many writers left their jobs to make that point.
“I think the writer’s strike was really good. It puts into perspective how important writers are to the production community, and how they need to be given credit and paid accordingly,” sophomore Ansley Mueller said. Many think that the strike was necessary to make a change in the production and entertainment industry.
Others are quite upset about the projects that were postponed because of the strike, including the movie adaptation of the well-loved romance novel, “It Ends With Us,” written by Colleen Hoover. Projects like “It Ends With Us,” which were in the middle of production when the strike started, were suspended until the conclusion of the strike.
Highly anticipated Marvel movies, such as “Captain America: Brave New World,” which was set to release in May 2024, but has instead been pushed to July 26, 2024.
Recent coverage of the Spider-Verse movies has also revealed that the animators of the movies have left, leaving “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” postponed until further notice. The animators of the highly-grossing Spider-Verse movies were a key part of the production, as their style is a unique and new concept to the animation world.
Overall, the entertainment industry is now going through major push backs because of this strike. However, since the strike has been officially concluded, we can hope to see new trailers and project releases in the coming months.
