Every Halloween, there are many different costumes that appear without fail such as Dracula, Frankenstein, mummies and more. While Halloween staples are popular enough to reappear each year, some are more popular than others.
“Micheal Myers is a really good one, along with Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leather-Face and Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees. Also Scream’s Ghostface And Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Kreuger,” said sophomore Anthony Hallsan.
All of these monsters are characters from classic horror films and are infamous due to the popularity of their respective films.
“Probably The Ghost, it is iconic due to its prevalence in several mythologies. It is an easy costume and over the years has become a symbol of Halloween and the Halloween spirit,” said Steven Villegas, a sophomore at Wake Forest High School.
In mythology, the ghost is the restless incarnation of a living thing that died with unfinished business, primarily humans. They have been subjects of myth since 856 A.D. in the period of the Roman empire.
Ghosts do seem to be the most popular monster with movies such as “Ghost” or characters such as Casper the friendly ghost or the three ghosts from Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol.”
The only other monsters quite as infamous as ghosts are zombies, skeletons, and vampires. All three have the same amount of folklore and media presence but are seen less often because the design of a ghost is very simple and can easily be changed to fit the needs of a movie or other media.
All things considered, ghosts are easily adaptable, infamous in media, and a Halloween staple every year making them the most popular Halloween monster.
