You’ve probably played video games like “Rocket League” or “Mario Kart” with friends or by yourself for fun, but have you ever thought of doing it competitively?
That’s what FVHS economics teacher, Adam Fox, hopes to accomplish with a school eSports team.
“ESports is basically a platform that we’re going to use, where people could play games against other people and online games such as ‘Rocket League’ or ‘Mario Kart,’ and they’re able to compete with other people online,” said Fox.
Competing in video games may not seem very important, but it’s a very serious opportunity with serious prizes.
“ESports League works on pretty much a tournament based on a rec league,” club president junior Leighton Catton explained. “You play a whole league, 99 weeks. Then you have a tournament at the end where you get flown out to New York City and get to compete for $5,000 per person.”
“Rocket League,” “League of Legends,” and “Mario Kart” are just a fraction of the games students would be able to compete in. The leagues would have a variety of at least 10 games you can play.
However, there are fees associated with the platform they would be using, and it’s vital that they have a good amount of students to mitigate that.
“The more people that can join the club, the more that it could get a jumpstart to actually function,” said Fox.
They would need at least 50 students overall.
“If the word gets out enough, I think there’s definitely a possibility for that,” said Fox.
Not only would a competitive gaming team be fun, but it has a lot of benefits. Members would learn teamwork and collaborative skills, increase their hand-eye coordination, and learn to problem-solve.
Sophomore Riley Bashaw said, “I get to meet a lot of people who share similar interests in games… I’ll just have a fun thing to do after school.”
An eSports team would be a great opportunity that would provide many benefits for FVHS. If you’re thinking of joining, contact Fox in room 4302, or join the club’s Remind at @PKmon23.
