Find out why “Beaux is Afraid”

Logan Livingston, Features Writer

The infamous horror director of “Hereditary” and “Midsommar” recently has come out with a new movie. Ari Aster’s new film “Beau is Afraid” isn’t his usual terrifying horror film. This one is supposedly a comedy, a “nightmare comedy,” specifically. It is based around a man and his insufferable mommy issues as he goes through an insane walking nightmare.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as the title character, an anxiety ridden man full of paranoia and shame. The movie also includes an animated sequence made by the artists and directors of “The Wolf House,” which is a great horror movie that definitely has an art style that’s perfect for this. Patty Lupone and Parker Posey also are a part of the cast.

Reviews for “Beau is Afraid” seem to be very mixed, with most people complaining about the three hour runtime. It’s got a 2.9 out of 5 star review on Google and a 70 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, so the reviews are hit or miss. The general consensus for the film though is that Ari Aster is too self indulgent, but Phoenix is so committed to his role that he gives the movie a lot of power that with any other actor, wouldn’t be there.

Is the “Beau is Afraid” worth watching or should you skip the new Aster film? Well, if you can sit through the three hour runtime, and you like Joaquin Phoenix then this is perfect for you. Just don’t go in expecting an outright horror movie.
