It’s been two years since the January 6th riot
Nearly two years after the January 6 capital attack, the House of Representatives select committee has now released the final report of the incident, which was allegedly started by former president Donald Trump, and was used to delay and sabotage the 2020 election.
The report includes over 800 pages discussing the attack and critical information regarding it. It heavily focuses on politicians, and people involved, documented evidence, and shows the orchestrated plan that led to the event.
“Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!” said Trump via Twitter on Dec. 19, 2020.
This call to action led to over 2,000 people coming alongside Trump outside the White House, all attending the anticipated rally that he had promised.
“Fight for Trump, Fight for Trump,” chanted the audience.
Live footage and photographs showed many rioters climbing walls, fighting with police, and ransacking offices, as well as broken statues, murals, windows, doors, and stolen equipment inside the Capitol Building.
The number of Capitol Police present was much lower than normal due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which left rioters with an advantage to storm the building. The violence and high tension caused many people to be wounded, and five people were found dead.
With politicians stuck inside the building, many of them were able to share their experiences and their current statuses during the ongoing hours after the initial attack.
“Update at 2:36 pm ET: An injured Capitol Police officer was just escorted by me. Shortly after this video, several other officers with visible injuries to their faces walked by me. ‘You want to get the hell out of here, they’ve taken over the Capitol,’ one officer said,” said reporter Taylor Popielarz via Twitter.
Others were also sharing the importance of the event and how we can properly handle a similar situation in the future and all possible outcomes.
“Was barricaded in for several hours. I’ll tell y’all about it later. For now, we must focus on the task at hand: to preserve the integrity of our democracy, hold accountable those responsible for their attempts to subvert our nation’s elections and shred our Constitution apart,” said U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez via Twitter.
After months of waiting, the final report will be able to bring clarity to those affected. It will debunk any misinformation and spread true, fact-checked information. Families will be able to heal from the pain caused, and we can find ways to prevent another scary and life-threatening insurrection.
