Summer movie catalog 2022

Dylan Barbeau, Staff Writer

We are now in the month of May, which means the summer movie season has officially started. With that, people wonder what big movies will come out during the summer, as those usually make the most money of the year. So here is a catalog of every big movie coming out in theaters in Summer 2022.

Dr. Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness

The first movie in the catalog is also the first of two Marvel movies of the summer. In the sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange, Dr. Steven Strange, played once again by Benedict Cumberbatch, traverses through the multiverse with America Chaves, played by Xochitl Gomez, and Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch, played again by Elizabeth Olsen. For those curious, movies and TV shows recommended to be watched in preparation for this movie are Doctor Strange (obviously), Wandvision, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Top Gun: Maverick

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun is finally coming to theaters in a few weeks. The film follows Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’, played again by Tom Cruise, training the new generation of fighter pilots for the Fighter Weapons School, or Top Gun. The only film necessary to be watched before this film is Top Gun.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Releasing Memorial Day weekend along with Top Gun: Maverick is a feature film based on the popular adult (more accurately 13 and up) animated show Bob’s Burgers. The film centers around the family that runs the titular restaurant struggling with obstacles such as debt and a sinkhole. You’ll likely be fine if you have the slightest idea of the original show.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Up next in the catalog is the culmination of nearly 30 years of dinosaurs in the latest and last entry in the Jurassic World trilogy. It revolves around dinosaurs now being free on the mainland and all the original human trio and the newer characters must band together to stop a new corporate entity. All the five previous movies, the Netflix show, the short film Battle at Big Rock, and the prologue (the latter two being on youtube) are all one needs to be prepared.

Next up is an unusual spin-off to the Toy Story franchise. This is a film about the in-universe film that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy and the main character is played by Chris Evans. You could watch the four Toy Story movies, but they may not be that important to this one.

Taking a break from big franchise movies, we come to a docu-pik based on the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Austin Butler plays the titular character while Tom Hanks plays his manager. Consider watching this if you have any interest in Presley.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Wrapping up these summer movies, we come to the other Marvel movie of the summer. This film picks up the story of Thor, played again by Chris Hemsworth, after Avengers: Endgame, where he now considers retiring. The films to watch are Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy films as they appear in this movie.
